Gettin' With It

***Getting started extra early today. I'm taking our neighbor lady to the hospital for a procedure later this morning, and will probably be there for several hours. This poor woman is very sick and frail and has nobody close to help her.

***Jonah Goldberg over in The Corner at National Review Online has a great piece up.

“This is a great great country that had gotten a little soft and we didn’t have that same competitive edge that we needed over the last couple of decades,” Mr. Obama said in response to a question about the country’s economic future. “We need to get back on track.”
Interesting perspective.  I wonder where America could have lost its competitive edge. It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with a government that blows billions on green energy boondoggles while making it harder to drill for oil while trying to make electricity rates “skyrocket.” It couldn’t have to do with extending unemployment benefits to 99 weeks (and rising), or to bailouts or perhaps advice like this offered by Michelle Obama:
“We left corporate America, which is a lot of what we’re asking young people to do,” she tells the women. “Don’t go into corporate America. You know, become teachers. Work for the community. Be social workers. Be a nurse. Those are the careers that we need, and we’re encouraging our young people to do that. But if you make that choice, as we did, to move out of the money-making industry into the helping industry, then your salaries respond.” Faced with that reality, she adds, “many of our bright stars are going into corporate law or hedge-fund management.”

It has been three years, and it still amazes me that we elected Barack Obama as our President. His was a media-driven candidacy and campaign. He had absolutely NO accomplishments to run on. He ran on rhetoric, and it worked. As Goldberg says toward the end of the piece:

Seriously, in 2008 we elected a community organizer, state senator, college instructor first term senator over a guy who spent five years in a Vietnamese prison. And now he’s lecturing us about how America’s gone “soft”? Really?

***Culture of Corruption. This should come as no surprise.

A Daily Caller investigation has found that in addition to the failed company Solyndra, at least four other solar panel manufacturing companies receiving in excess of $500 million in loan guarantees from the Obama administration employ executives or board members who have donated large sums of money to Democratic campaigns.
And as questions swirl around possible connections between political donations and these preferential financing arrangements, the Obama White House suddenly began deflecting The Daily Caller’s questions on Wednesday to the Democratic National Committee.

***It's been pretty wet in my corner of Indiana! It's certainly feeling like fall. That's okay, though, I love wearing warm, comfy clothes like sweatshirts. We usually have beautiful fall weather in Indiana. Hard to believe it's almost October already.

***Doctors and the American Medical Association are at odds over Obamacare.

For more than 160 years, the American Medical Association has served as the self-appointed chief lobbying group for doctors. But the AMA’s lofty status has been under threat over the last several years — and is under attack today. In fact, the AMA now only counts about 17% of doctors as members.
According to a new survey, the majority of doctors do not believe that the AMA represents their views and interests. Much of that dissatisfaction stems from the organization’s support for President Obama’s contentious health care reform package.
That shouldn’t be surprising. The AMA declares that its core mission is to “help doctors help patients.” But ObamaCare undermines that pursuit by making life harder for physicians and driving down the quality of care available to patients.

***Apparently the "enlightened" writers at Grey's Anatomy have written in an abortion for Sandra Oh's character. I got a couple of DVDs of that show to see if I would like it, and I didn't. Of course the creator of the show was all philosophical on how tastefully it was done and how she wanted to present "all points of view." Yeah, right. Here's what one of the commenters said:

What a world. NARAL writes our laws and Planned Parenthood directs our entertainment!
Poor Kevin McKidd. In "Rome," his wife had a son with her brother-in-law after she thought he'd been killed while off fighting with Julius Caesar. Then she killed herself when he found out and came at her with a big knife. "The boy is blameless" were her last words as she fell to her death. The child was blameless on "Grey's Anatomy" as well, but his or her mother's me-centric world view couldn't quite see that.
Anyway, the pro-aborts (or anti-lifers -- I love that!) are starting a new push to remove the "stigma" of abortion. They want to convince us that an abortion is really no different than an appendectomy. Both remove something that's destined to cause problems later on; the appendix, by bursting, and the baby, by living. So what's bad about abortion is not that you are actually murdering a human being, but that society as a whole hasn't accepted what a good and responsible "choice" abortion is. Kool-Aid, anyone?
Expect a lot more abortion on prime time.

Speaking on the government's role in diet and health last week, Bloomberg told the UN General Assembly, “There are powers only governments can exercise, policies only governments can mandate and enforce and results only governments can achieve. To halt the worldwide epidemic of non-communicable diseases, governments at all levels must make healthy solutions the default social option. That is ultimately government’s highest duty.”

Really? This is what the Founders had in mind? The government as food police? That Bloomberg calls himself a Republican is an insult even to most RINOs. He's a lefty Democrat, to the bone.

***Excellent piece by Neal Boortz on the "footstools" who keep asking Barack Obama to raise their taxes. An excerpt:

Yesterday I told you my feelings on LinkedIn.  Then we get this ridiculous question that came out of yesterday’s LinkedIn townhall with Barack Obama.  A man by the name of Doug Edwards bellies up to the mic.  Doug Edwards is a liberal, who has donated $300,000 to Democrats over the last decade.  That’s a lot of dough.  What does this man do?  He classifies himself as “unemployed by choice.”  Why?  Because he started out as a little company called Google and had enough money to retire.  Good for him.  But then Doug Edwards comes to the LinkedIn townhall and asks Barack Obama this insipid question: "Would you please raise my taxes?"

Now before we get to Obama’s answer, let’s talk about the question itself.  If Doug Edwards is “unemployed by choice” this must mean that he doesn’t pay income taxes.  It’s hard to have taxable wages when you aren’t working.  We must assume, then, that when Doug Edwards asks for his taxes to be raised, he is talking about capital gains taxes.

Here’s the big secret for people like Doug Edwards.  Well … apparently it is a secret, because these footstools don’t seem to realize this.  The Treasury Department accepts checks.  You don’t actually have to OWE the IRS money to write a check to the Treasury Department.  If you feel so inclined, you can simply take out your check book and write away!  Any amount will do!  One dollar?  Fine!  One million dollars?  Knock yourself out!  You don’t have to ask Dear Ruler to raise your taxes .. you can set your own tax rate!  The tax rate quoted by the IRS is a minimum!  There is no maximum.  You can even borrow money to pay over 100% of your earnings if you care to!  So just DO IT AND SHUT THE HELL UP!

Follow the link and read the rest. The biggest whopper told by Obama is that "he doesn't want to punish the rich." That is a bold-faced lie. That's all he's been talking about. He calls it "paying their fair share," but it's punishment nonetheless.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, anyone in the current GOP field would be a vast improvement over Barack Obama.

***Obama's "new" combative tone? WHERE have you people been? Here's Barack Obama, misleading and lying as usual:

“I mean, has anybody been watching the debates lately?” he asked. Referring to Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, who has sought federal aid to fight wildfires caused by a prolonged drought, Mr. Obama said: “You’ve got a governor whose state is on fire denying climate change. It’s true. You’ve got audiences cheering at the prospect of somebody dying because they don’t have health care and booing a service member in Iraq because they’re gay.”

Michelle Malkin's response:

First quick point: So a few stray hecklers at GOP debates are representative of the entire Tea Party, but the Teamster who warmed up Obama’s Labor Day rally crowd in Detroit by urging them to “take these son of a b*tches out” warrant and the Democrats who keep heckling Republicans and Tea Party activists with suicide bomber smears and all the other Big Labor thugs threatening profanity-laced violence against Republicans somehow no comment from the civility police at the White House?

***From A Gift of Inspiration:

The brilliant you, released!

You're a remarkable person. But, you knew that already. Still, buried among apathy, unbelief and inhibition, is the brilliant "you" waiting to be released. You already knew that, too.
A few disappointments here, several temporary defeats there, and POOF! just like that, you settled for being a risk-conscious, opportunity: self-denied, generality. Nobody has ever made any progress by standing still. You're not an exception; and you're not alone. In fact, you have plenty of company. But, why settle for a life that looks like just about everyone else's? Do something magnificent with your God-given gifts and boldly distinguish yourself from the masses. Decide-on this day-to connect with your brilliance, within.

Paramount in your quest for brilliance is the personal development and daily utilization of your talents and abilities. As a matter of fact, it's required. It's not necessary to be perfect. Striving for excellence in everything you do is enough to release your brilliance.

Trust me. You were not born to be "mild." So cut it out! There's an entire universe out there starving for your gifts. How long will you continue to wait to take those last four classes needed for your degree? What career have you just been "wishing it were so" about? If all you can see is yourself remaining 16 units short of your degree, how can you possibly prepare for an exciting future? If you can't believe for a meaningful vocation now, will you have the passion to believe for one later?

Challenge yourself. Commit to do just two things this hour that will untap your brilliance. Revamp your resume; make a phone call to your advisor. Even a modest amount of brilliance unreleased, would relay the message to your brain: "Wow, she's serious!"

Ignite your passion. Inhale, then excel. Stand and deliver! See, then be!

Your life matters. Visualize your brilliance totally released. Then boldly, step into the vision.

Here We Go Again!

***Wow, what a busy weekend. Now here we go into another busy week! No wonder they fly by so fast.

***Obama's biggest lies. Okay, there's a lot of competition here, I admit. But this piece is excellent.

If you work hard, play by the rules, save your money, create jobs, and make a success out of yourself, President Obama and the Democrat party will plunder everything you have worked so hard for, because in their view that is only fair.
That is the meaning of the policies President Obama is espousing as he campaigns for re-election around the country this week. As Mark Steyn has explained, there is no bill yet that the President is demanding Congress pass, it won't create any jobs, and there is no money to pay for it. It is just a traveling road show, and we need to start to hold accountable our relatives, friends and neighbors who would fall for it, and thereby darkly threaten the entire future of America.

Here's what Obama is running around the country saying:

Middle-class families shouldn't pay higher tax rates than millionaires and billionaires. That's pretty straightforward. It's hard to argue against that. Warren Buffet's secretary shouldn't pay a higher tax rate than Warren Buffett. There is no justification for it. It is wrong that in the United States of America, a teacher or a nurse or a construction worker who earns $50,000 should pay higher tax rates than somebody pulling in $50 million. Anybody who says we can't change the tax code to correct that.... They should have to defend that unfairness -- explain why somebody who's making $50 million a year in the financial markets should be paying 15 percent on their taxes, when a teacher making $50,000 a year is paying more than that -- paying a higher rate. They ought to have to answer for it.

This is a farce, and Peter Ferrara sets the record straight:

Let me educate you, Mr. President, even though I am quite certain you are not interested in hearing any answer that contradicts your committed religious beliefs. But the truth is that the unfairness you discuss is a fantasy. The facts are just the opposite.
Even before you were elected, Mr. Obama, under the tax policies adopted by President Reagan, House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and the much vilified President George W. Bush, official IRS data for 2007 showed that the top 1 percent of income earners paid more in federal income taxes than the bottom 95 percent combined! The top 1 percent of income earners that year earned 22 percent of income but paid 40.4 percent of total income taxes. When Reagan became President, the top 1 percent paid 17.4 percent of income taxes, as I note in my recent book, America's Ticking Bankruptcy Bomb. As Jack Kemp used to say, if you want to soak the rich, cut tax rates. Moreover, the bottom 40 percent plus of income earners now pay no federal income tax on net as a group.

The worst part about all this is - the President KNOWS this. He KNOWS he's lying to the American people. And the people who fall for it again, at the risk of sounding like a Democrat, should have their voting rights taken away by reason of insanity. Many of the ones who fell for his blather in 2008 will, no doubt, swallow this lie whole and regurgitate it over and over. The Republican candidates need to hammer him harder on this. The Left and the media are going to call them racists anyway, they need to stop worrying about his color and worry more about his insidious policies that are destroying this country.

He did not offer to cut down on his or his wife's frivolous gallivanting around

He did not threaten to not pay the senators and representatives or any of their staff

He did not threaten to take benefits away from welfare recipients

He did not threaten the food stamp programs

He did not threaten to not pay foreign aid

***If You Bring Love
By Joseph Campbell

At a certain moment in Nietzsche's life, the idea came to him of what he called 'the love of your fate.' Whatever your fate is, whatever the heck happens, you say, "This is what I need." It may look like a wreck, but go at it as though it were an opportunity, a challenge.

If you bring love to that moment - not discouragement - you will find the strength is there. Any disaster that you can survive is an improvement in your character, your stature, and your life. What a privilege! This is when the spontaneity of your own nature will have a chance to flow. Then, when looking back at your life, you will see that the moments which seemed to be great failures followed by wreckage were the incidents that shaped the life you have now. You’ll see that this is really true.

Nothing can happen to you that is not positive. Even though it looks and feels at the moment like a negative crisis, it is not.

I can count on her to do whatever she does correctly, so I could take my mind off of my business for a few hours and relax. Boy, did I need that! We ate at Panera, I really enjoyed that. ***Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat candidate for Senator from Massachusetts, is certainly a dyed-in-the-wool socialist. Listen to this:

“I hear all this, you know, ‘Well, this is class warfare,’” she says of Democratic tax policy. “No. There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody.”
She goes on to cite the proverbial factory owner who relies on public services like roads, schools, and cops. Warren could just as easily have mentioned as contributors to the factory owner’s success freedom and a government strictly bound by the rule of law, but they must not have been top of mind.
She argued that these goods are things “the rest of us paid for,” the “rest of us did.” When it comes to federal income taxes — the focus of the current debate — this isn’t right. About half the country doesn’t pay them, and the top 10 percent pays about 70 percent. Insofar as those taxes fund Warren’s public goods, her rich industrialist disproportionately contributes already.

Never mind that the factory owner pays taxes for those roads, etc. too. Never mind that business owners, "the rich," already pay a disproportionate share of taxes. Never mind that the business owner is the one who took the risks, put up the money, put in the work, and HIRED THE PEOPLE to make his business grow.

Geez, socialists are irritating. Read the whole piece. Here's a reality check, Ms. Warren.

The Solyndra executives are scheduled to testify before Congress, and they’re expected to take the 5th. Why not take the 5th? They’ve already taken $535 million.

***Here are the labor unions' ideas to save our economy:

  • No benefit cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
  • No more cuts in pay or benefits for federal workers
  • Establish a government-run insurance program known as “the public option”
  • Allow prescription drugs to be re-imported
  • Have Medicare negotiate drug prices
  • Draw down troops in Iraq and Afghanistan
  • A financial transactions tax
  • A millionaires’ surtax
  • Tax capital gains as ordinary income
I love that tax capital gains as ordinary income thing.  Labor unions want to kill the investment marketplace.  Pretty much par for the course for people who are unable to exist in the workplace without being members of a mob.

***Think it's a coincidence that the three states deemed worst for conducting business are blue states run by Democrats?

Nearly one quarter of the survey's 322 respondents said Illinois had one of the least favorable business climates, according to Development Counsellors International, which specializes in economic development and tourism marketing.

Taxes and high costs were among the factors that contributed to the state's poor showing in the survey. California was deemed to have the worst business climate, followed by New York and Illinois.

Here are some fun facts:

Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina were viewed as having the best business climates, according to the survey. Best and Worst States, Things in Common

  • Illinois, New York, and California all have Democratic governors.
  • Illinois, New York, and California all have governors beholden to public unions.
  • Illinois, New York, and California are not right to work states.
  • Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina are all right-to-work states.
  • Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina do not have governors beholden to public unions.

***Job-killing regulatory policies. Here's one CEO's story.

In my own business, securities regulations have prohibited me from hiring brokers for more than three years. I was even fined fifteen thousand dollar expressly for hiring too many brokers in 2008. In the process I incurred more than $500,000 in legal bills to mitigate a more severe regulatory outcome as a result of hiring too many workers. I have also been prohibited from opening up additional offices. I had a major expansion plan that would have resulted in my creating hundreds of additional jobs. Regulations have forced me to put those jobs on hold.

Government needs to GET OUT of private business.

***Taxpayers foot the bill for Justice Dept.'s $16 muffins, among other things. Business as usual.

The Justice Department and several of its agencies engaged in “extravagant and wasteful” spending on food, beverages and event planning for law enforcement conferences, including paying $16 each for muffins, $76 per person for lunch and more than $8 for a cup of coffee, according to an audit released Tuesday by the department’s Office of Inspector General.
At one conference, a workshop on enhancing judicial skills, participants were served snacks of Cracker Jack, popcorn and candy during a break, costing $32 a person, and also were provided a “deluxe” ice cream assortment that cost $10 per person. The 166 people attending a separate conference of U.S. attorneys were fed beef Wellington appetizers at $7.32 per serving.

***Imagine the outcry if a Republican First Lady dared such extravagance:

That was no ordinary bling on the wrist of First Lady Michelle Obama at the DNC fundraiser in New York Tuesday night. Those fancy diamond cuffs were the creation of 23-year-old Katie Decker, whose namesake jewelry line has been making a serious splash since her graduation from Texas A&M two years ago.

The native Houstonian is over the moon with the fab pub that photos of the first lady in Katie Decker are already providing. Michelle Obama's stylist picked up the bracelets at Katie's showroom in Fragments in Soho. You can see more photos of the Obamas from the evening here by checking out the Gotham Hall event.

If you've been saving your nickels and dimes, the cuffs are available locally at Judith Ann Jewels. The First Lady wore Katie's Lotus cuff priced at $15,000 with 2.9 carats of diamonds, her Gothic cuff at $15,350 with 2.17 carats in diamonds and the Quatrefoil bracelet at $11,800 with 1.73 carats in diamonds.

***Well, I took a nice long walk yesterday. I took the hillier route, which is a good workout. We have a lot of hills around here, so depending on which way I go I can go up and down several. Good for the butt, which is just what I need.

***This is sickening, and so typical of the mindset of so many Americans.

In short, it's almost impossible to sum up what's wrong with America's economy while standing on one leg.

Unless your name is Mr. EBT. EBT, for those who are too ignorant to know how their tax dollars are spent, stands for Electronic Benefit Transfer. Essentially, state governments distribute welfare payments via a credit card (EBT). Most major food outlets take EBT as a form of cash. States cannot charge sales tax on any items bought with an EBT.
Just who is Mr. EBT, though? He's a self-titled rapper who just came out with a new YouTube sensation titled "My EBT." Yes, he wears the traditional rapper get-up of a straight-brimmed hat and baggy pants. But look beyond the clothing and see something deeper -- the sort of leech who is bankrupting our society.

In a three minute, 51-second song, Mr. EBT champions his eponymous card -- or rather, his sister's EBT card. (Yes, that's fraud.) Because, as we all know, government dependency is a family value. As he wanders aimlessly through the aisles of corner stores, he chants, "Sandwiches, chips, Snickers, Twix ... I'm eating good. Potato chips ... a big box of Oreos ... cereal, Kix ... my EBT, my EBT...walking down the ave', there's food I got a hunger for." He doesn't have a hunger for grammar, but he has hunger for taxpayer cash. "It's the EBT, it's not food stamps," he says. "If I don't have my card, I use someone else's!"

As the writer says later in the piece, so many people just take what is given to them, and feel entitled to it. Your money is their money, hand it over! This is exactly what the liberals want. Make people dependent on the government, then tell them conservatives want to take their goodies away, so they better vote Democrat to keep it coming.

***At least 200 murders in Mexico now linked to Fast & Furious weapons. Just imagine the outcry if this were a Republican administration. There would be Congressional hearings and talk of impeachment, and this is all you'd hear about on every station. As it is, barely a peep. Our media is practicing journalistic malpractice. There is no integrity in our mainstream media any more. Good thing there are alternatives now.

***This week's Eco-Hypocrisy Award goes to Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick (a Democrat, of course).

“You got me!” grinned the Governor.
He’s talking about video shot by WBZ of Mr. Patrick leaving his Milton home this morning with his assigned state trooper at the wheel for the routine drive into work in his SUV.
One problem.
The Governor himself recently declared this “Car-Free Week,” urging people to ditch their autos in favor of public transportation, biking, walking, or at the very least carpooling — espousing the environmental and health benefits of that switch.
The Red Line, by the way, is within walking distance of his house — one of three “T” stations within a half mile of home.

***Shock Poll? From Power Line:

That is how Drudge is headlining this McClatchy-Marist survey which finds support for President Obama evaporating, so that “even” Sarah Palin trails him by only five points, 49-44. I would say that if there is a shock, it is that Obama–an awful president who acts as though he barely cares–can lead any Republican contender.
More significant is that, by a margin of 49 percent to 36 percent, respondents said they definitely plan to vote against Obama. What is more, by 52 percent to 38 percent, voters think Obama will lose, no matter who the GOP nominee turns out to be. Under normal circumstances those results really would be shocking, but, given what a disaster the Obama administration has proved to be, the marvel is that they aren’t worse.
